Fran and Sandy,

Glad the blog is up. Oh boy, I can only imagine what bizarre comments will be posted. Sam and I are doing well. It is quiet in our office, no one is teasing us. We are actually getting work done - I know don't be too shocked Fran - after all i am writing this during work hours - but i am on lunch!

Hey Fran,

We'll be missing those dance moves tomorrow night. I'll make sure the DJ plays "Raining Men" for you. Sue showed me the neighborhood picture. I'm assuming you won't be buying any real estate in that area.

Seriously, been thinking about you and hope things are going as well as possilbe. Start thinking about where we're going to go golfing in the Spring.

Don't worry . . . I'm sure Todd will bust a move or two!! We'll send pics Saturday.

Will be thinking about you and Jess all day tomorrow. Stay positive!!

12/5/08 - The day started for us at 8:30 this morning. After doing the blood work we went down to the OR floor. We sat with Jessica's mom for about 15 minutes when the doctor came out and said everything went well. It took 25 minutes to extract the marrow needed. They said she has a good cell count with the amount collected and that was in her favor. Less time in the OR.

The transplant itself was easy for Fran. It was much like a blood transfusion. It took about 1 1/2 hours. Once we were finished we went back to the OR floor to check on Jessica. She was in the recovery room for hours. Fran went to check on her and she was fine, a little dizzy from the anesthesia but fine. She said she never felt the procedure being done.

Fran has some nausea and is extremely tired but all in all it was a good day. Now we wait. He needs to be watched carefully for signs of rejection and to monitor his blood counts. He's going to continue to decline over the next few days before the counts start to rebound and he starts to feel better. Both handled their procedures as well as can be expected and where sent home to rest. I know I said this before how phenomenal I think Jess is for doing this for her dad but phenomenal doesn’t even begin to express how brave I think she was and how great she is.

Thanks again everyone for the well wishes and prayers.

Hi, Fran! Several years ago you graciously (and tenaciously) used your 'pull power' to reward pagination team members when we were setting all sorts of shipping records. You must have known how shocked & thrilled we were when you presented each of us with those delightful surprises. (I don't call you 'uncle Fran' for nothin' ya know!)

Everytime I look at, touch, or wear the necklace I purchased with that reward, your smiling, freckled face (LOL) comes to mind.

Today I wore that necklace to work. It is forever my immediate link with your tenacity & generosity.

Mike & I send all optimistic thoughts & prayers for your welfare, Fran. God Bless!

Howdy Fran!

Just got home from work and wanted to drop you a note and let you know that we're hoping you are doing well. It isn't as cold as it has been out so I am about to steady the ladder as Cliff goes up on the roof to clean the gutters and Rigby is doing a dance around the kitchen because he knows that when I get home that his din-din is just moments away. So as you can tell, big excitement here in Phoenixville :-)
We'll be thinking of you and checking in periodically and wishing the best to you and Sandy.

Hi, Fran.
Sorry I missed you when you were making the rounds before Thanksgiving.
When I think of you the phrase "high and tight" comes to mind. This not only refers to your haircut (which I sometimes emulate in the summer), but also to your attitude.
"High" because you're always upbeat and positive with a friendly word for all.
"Tight" because no matter how crazy or unpredictable the situation, you keep it together.
I fully expect to see that red flattop back at the office by spring.
Your pal,
Joe

12/10 - Monday and Tuesday this week Fran was in receiving what we hope are the last 2 days of chemo. Since he had to be in the hospital for 12 hours each day I drove into work so I could attend some mtgs myself. When I got back on Monday Fran spiked a fever. They did some tests but still sent him home for the night. During the night the fever broke but then a few hours later spiked again. On Tuesday they ran more tests to see if they could isolate the infection that was causing the fever. This wasn’t supposed to happen this early. They had to put him on some antibiotics that we have to administer intravenously every 4 hours. You should see this mess with me in a mask and lots of syringes. I joke with him that he’s lucky I like him since I’m up to all hours giving him his meds.
He’s very tired and has lost some weight but all in all is doing ok. The BLOG comments make him chuckle and there isn’t a day that goes by that he doesn’t talk about work or the friendships he’s made over the years. He appreciates the postings since they give him something to look forward to each day when we come back from the hospital. I know he misses everyone and really appreciates their prayers and thoughts.

What up homie? Your boy Neville checking in to holla at my boy. Yo', you gonna get in TROUBLE WITH HR for missing the xmas party dude!!! But they might cut you some slack cause-a-all the pizza parties. It's all good though, only because New York is in the houze. For shizzle!!!! Anyway, just wanted to holla to let you know that Nev got your back. Over the years that I've been in Philadelphia, I've got in good with God. You can say we're on a first name basis. I'm gonna push you up on my prayer list so that you can rest assured that something (really someone) larger than you-n-me has been called in to see about you. I've always liked and respected you from day one so I'll be diggety dagged on if I sit by and let anything go down with you without putting in whatever I can. Do what you got to do my brother to get your body better and when you come back to us, just walk by me and give me a "aight" nod. (In the hood thats when you move your head up and down. Check page 26 of the playa's manual. Dag!) Anyway, rest assured that EVERYONE here's pulling for you. Aight? Rest easy my brother and take care of yourself. Tell Sandy, props to you my sister. Neville's done. I've got Jerk chicken waiting for me.

Hang in there Fran. I thought you could use a laugh so here you go.

Two guys, one old timer and one young, are pushing their carts around Lowe's Building Supply when they collide.

The old timer says to the young guy, 'Sorry about that. I'm looking for my wife, and I guess I wasn't paying attention to where I was going.

'The young guy says, 'That's OK. It's a coincidence. I'm looking for my wife, too. I can't find her and I'm getting a little desperate.'

The old guy says, 'Well, maybe we can help each other. What does your wife look like?'

The young guy says, 'Well, she is 24 yrs old, tall, with blonde hair, big blue eyes, long legs, big boobs, and she's wearing tight white shorts, a halter top and no bra. What does your wife look like?'

The old timer says...... 'Doesn't matter --- let's look for yours.'

Most Old timers are helpful like that!

We always hearthe rules from the female side. Now here are the rules from the male side.
Please note. These are all numbered 1 ON PURPOSE!

1. Men are NOT mind readers.

1. Learn to work the toilet seat. You're a big girl. If it's up, put it down. We need it up, you need it down. You don't hear us complaining about you leaving it down.

1. Sunday sports It's like the full moon or the changing of the tides. Let it be.

1. Crying is blackmail.

1. Ask for what you want. Let us be clear on this one: Subtle hints do not work!
Strong hints do not work!
Obvious hints do not work!
Just say it!

1. Yes and No are perfectly acceptable answers to almost every question.

1. Come to us with a problem only if you want help solving it. That's what we do. Sympathy is what your girlfriends are for.

1. Anything we said 6 months ago is inadmissible in an argument. In fact, all comments become null and void after 7 Days.

1. If you think you're fat, you probably are. Don't ask us.

1. If something we said can be interpreted two ways and one of the ways makes you sad or angry, we meant the other one.

1. You can either ask us to do something, OR tell us how you want it done. Not both. If you already know best how to do it, just do it yourself.

1. Whenever possible, Please say whatever you have to say during commercials..

1. Christopher Columbus did NOT need directions and neither do we.

1. ALL men see in only 16 colors, like Windows default settings. Peach, for example, is a fruit, not a color. Pumpkin is also a fruit. We have no idea what mauve is.

1. If it itches, it will be scratched. We do that.

1. If we ask what is wrong and you say 'nothing,' We will act like nothing's wrong. We know you are lying, but it is just not worth the hassle.

1. If you ask a question you don't want an answer to, expect an answer you don't want to hear.

1. When we have to go somewhere, absolutely anything you wear is fine...Really .

1. Don't ask us what we're thinking about unless you are prepared to discuss such topics as football or motor sports.

1. You have enough clothes.

1. You have too many shoes.

Hi you2,

Whatever Erin says, it's all a lie. The fish hate her and that's the only reason they swam around all excited, they looked 1/2 dead to me as do your plants at the house. (Not my fault!!!!!!). I think you should consider a new school for Erin, I am concerned about her spelling. Remember not to use wire hangers when you move again.

Sue said...

Ok Todd, you're starting to sound like Dennis! I'm reminded of at least 4 of those rules each week.

Fran + Sandy said...

Erin – are you going to let her talk to you that way? You shouldn’t stand for that you know. You’re a teenager and you have all the answers already.

Mom – wire hangers leave marks. Why do you think I stuck around in the phone directory business for so long? You can beat them all you want with the phone books and guess what NO MARKS.

Todd – well let’s just say jealousy over us women is no reason to lash out. That’s no way to go through life.

Sue – just smack Denise with the phone book. We have lots of them around work.

Hey Fran and Sandy,

Hope you are feeling better. All the best. Jess rocks and so do both of you. See ya soon.

We both watched the video this evening. Fran was having a bad day today with the nausea and the overall just not feeling well. The toast meant allot to him and he appreciates the kind words from everyone. These are the bright spots that makes it just a little better each day. The fevers are gone for now however the nausea is most likely coming from all the medication he has to take each day. That in addition to having really low counts makes him very tired. For someone who is especially active it’s hard to walk up a flight a stairs without resting is rough on him.
I can’t thank everyone enough for their prayers. Sandy

Hi, Fran & Sandy. ep here. This just in from the UK; a bit wordy (you know how long-winded the Brits can be (LOL)):

A Christmas Story for people having a bad day:

When four of Santa's elves got sick, the trainee elves did not produce
toys
as fast as the regular ones, and Santa began to feel the Pre-Christmas
pressure.

Then Mrs Claus told Santa her Mother was coming to visit, which stressed
Santa even more.

When he went to harness the reindeer, he found that three of them were
about
to give birth and two others had jumped the fence and were out, Heaven
knows
where.

Then when he began to load the sleigh, one of the floorboards cracked, the
toy bag fell to the ground and all the toys were scattered.

Frustrated, Santa went in the house for a cup of apple cider and a shot of
rum. When he went to the cupboard, he discovered the elves had drank all
the
cider and hidden the liquor. In his frustration, he accidentally dropped
the
cider jug, and it broke into hundreds of little glass pieces all over the
kitchen floor. He went to get the broom and found the mice had eaten all
the
straw off the end of the broom.

Just then the doorbell rang, and irritated Santa marched to the door,
yanked
it open, and there stood a little angel with a great big Christmas tree.

The angel said very cheerfully, 'Merry Christmas, Santa. Isn't this a
lovely
day? I have a beautiful tree for you. Where would you like me to stick
it?'

And so began the tradition of the little angel on top of the Christmas
tree.

...holiday huggeroos (that's not IM speak, is it????)

Fran + Sandy said...

Erin – now Sue’s poking fun at you. No one loves you but your mom – I’ll stick up for you Erin. They should know better then to make fun of the short bus riders like you. It isn’t very nice of them. Tell Baby Buffalo doing Fran and I said hello.

Connie – you not having a pair of shoes to match. I’m not falling for it.

Sue – send down the goods. (Cookies that is)

In all seriousness the holidays are around the corner and we hope everyone has a joyous holiday spending time with their families. In times like this you have lots of time to really think about what’s important. It’s having loved ones to share each day with.

Fran is doing better today. He’s been making little jabs at me and the nurses today so I can tell he feels a little better. He doesn’t have you all to mess with so it’s been building up. I don’t think he can help himself.

LasotaGirl said...

All I can say is that Erin needs a dictionary for Christmas....

Mommy Dearest said...

I think the majority is on my side when it comes to Erin's spelling skills. I guess i have to learn another foreign language. Who or what is Baby buffalo?? Is this a secret grandchild you all kept from me????

Thanks mom....sort of.
I do NOT ride the short bus.
I ride the gangster mobile (aka regular school bus.) ;D

So what has Fran got to say mom?
Not you, because you were mean.
:P ..... just like the rest of them

gawdddddd

Fran + Sandy said...

Erin – Fran said he has your back DAWGETTE – I’m sure I don’t have the proper IM spelling so just go with it.

Fran is better again today. No fevers, no nausea just tired but watch out, just when you thought he was sleeping he blurts stuff out. As Suzette would say ”I love you enough to smash you in the head with a shovel”. For those that didn’t know Suzette she was a pistol. Once we came here to the Baltimore Inner Harbor and she told us about how she said this Lisa one day. Nothing says love like that but coming from Suzette it’s no surprise either.
Being here now brings back those memories and as much as we miss Suzette I know she’s watching over Fran.

They don’t expect much to change with Fran over the next few days. As long as the nausea stays under control he’s in better spirits and is able to eat.

12/20 – Fran’s doing better today. His white blood count was under 50 for 4 days in a row, yesterday was 60 and today he’s reaching 200. Still a ways off since the low range is 4500 however seeing them start to climb made him feel better. They can always drop again but seeing the first signs of the increase was good for him. The rejection issues are still yet to come. Normally starts 30-45 after the transplant so we still have that to deal with but I’ll take each day of good news we get.

Each day going to the hospital unit you’re in close quarters with other transplant patients. You overhear the good and the bad with how others are doing so there is still a real scare out there for him.

We’re looking forward to the holidays even if it means we’re down here. He’s here and that’s what matters.

Jeff Thell said...

Yo Fran,

Send me some data on your white cell count and I'll whip up a snappy power point for ya. Glad to hear you're starting to turn the corner so you can get out of the crappy town. Ang and Jacqi say "hi" and we hope you start feeling better soon. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

By the way - I got the most awesome tin of cookies the other day. Do you know how the post office just knew to send them to me? Weird stuff.

Sue said...

Wow! Jeff's busting you about your cookies - not so nice! But he can knock out a darn nice Pareto chart to track your counts if you're interested!

IN OUR NEW OFFICE!! :o) I hope that you and your family have the best holiday possible.. get well.. we miss you here.. Jean

Christmas was very special this year with being able to go home for the day. As bad as he felt he was still happy to be home for holidays. It was nice being able to have the 3 girls home to celebrate with us.

The attached link is from the Ursinus College website regarding Jess. I’m so proud of her for what she did for her dad. Jessica is doing well from her surgery and is already back in the pool.

Thinking of you both and wishing you well as we get ready to head into the new year. The 2nd floor certainly looks different now that our YB neighbors have moved out! Cliff and Rigby say hello, and we'll check in with you again in 2009! Beth

Happy New Year Fran, Sandy & family!

I'm having a good time this morning watching my dogs slip & slide on the ice - it's a hoot. I know, that's not very nice but it really is funny. Sounds like the holidays brought some nice change for you too - great progess to go home for the day.

I'm heading out that way next week and looking forward to a few days above 0.

Enjoy your Sunday -
Maureen

I don't know what Maureen is talking about - above zero! Every bit of weather we get here we're just going to send it to her there so she'll get what's coming to her!

Hi Fran and Sandy. I'm just getting caught up on the blog from being out of town with no access to a computer for the past week and a half. It sounds like some good progress has been made. Good work!

Take care of yourselves and we'll keep watching the updates.

Happy New Year!
Barb

Well, Maureen made it in just in time for the freezing rain! I just had the dogs out and the sidewalks and grass are all icy. Hope you guys are having better weather than we are! My cold is almost gone, so maybe I'll get to see you next time your home.

Take care and talk to you soon!!

Well the bone marrow tests they did last week came back and he's all Jess now. He's been having a ball with the emotional jokes about being half female. Just wait till he's back in the office. You thought he was mess then, well just wait. He’s already trying to figure how Carole is going to change the handbook to negate any use of his new partial feminine makeup. He misses everyone “terribly” since he now has such a strong emotional side. I can attest to this since his hallucinations and dreams involve people from work.
– Dennis why did you leave the mice out?
– Why was Finn left alone with nothing to eat?
– He was really upset when Carole wore some really cheesy shoes to work.
– He did have one dream that Todd was the long driver of the golf group but then he realized it was a bad hallucination after he doubled his dose of the sleeping med’s by mistake – and that’s the truth so he threw out the sleeping pills.

Jeff - one of the nurses here looks just like Angela and Fran said that’s a compliment.

Sue said...

You know he was hallucinating if Carole was wearing cheesy shoes! Not gonna happen!!

Todd said...

First and most important, I glad you are doing well and hope to see you in the near future.
Second I’m hurt with your longest drive comment, although I’m sure it won’t happen now that you hit from the ladies tee’s.

Fran and San-

Just a quick note to say not a day goes by when we don't think of you! The 2nd floor is looking even stranger now that the cubes are being dismantled, I am thinking we might have to play kickball or something with all of that extra space!

Hey Fran and Sandy!

Greetings from the UK! Been catching up on your blog...good to hear you had christmas at home with the girls...lovely to see how everyone is keeping you entertained too!

The last 4 months have been fully consumed with my dissertation - challenging to say the least. It's been a slog to keep motivated whilst working too so it was good to finally hand it in on 12th Jan - hurrah!!! Studies are over, no more assignments!

Well after 8 years my boy came through! Chris popped the question at 11.50 p.m. on New Year's Eve with a 'beautiful' plastic pink flowery gem ring. He also presented a 'rock' that went along with it, the edible type with the words 'Hot Lips' running through it! (Classy?!!?)

We were having a dinner party at his sister's place with his brother and his folks. I burst into tears... choking on the strawberry I was eating(!?)...his mum was crying, his sister was crying, his dad was falling off his chair...was all a bit of a blur...but I remember hearing his dad saying 'has she said 'yes' yet?'...and Chris told me later that he did say 'you don't have to answer me now. You can tell me later if you want.' ...must have been blubbing for longer than I realised, oops!! We're hunting for the 'real' ring, which will probably cost a little more than £1.25! (A Yorkshireman true to form - tight (_|_)!! lol

So wedding planning is picking up momentum the project for this year and no doubt Bridezilla will be making an appearance!!

Here's to a happy 2009 to you both!

Love & best wishes
Lis & Chris x

Hi Fran and Sandy,
I'm glad to hear things are going well. That's great that you got to go home for Christmas. I'm sure you're gonna have lots of jokes about being part female. By the way, Adam Horry says hi.
take care,
John Armstrong

It's nice to hear from everyone and CONGRATULATIONS Lis. Our engagement sounds right up there with yours. For the first time on my life I was absolutely speechless and for those that know me it doesn't happen often. I stood there looking at him not comprehending what he had just asked. My daughter looked at me and finally had to ask if I was going to open the box.

Fran has been struggling a bit over the past couple weeks. Has to take many pills a day and with not having the ability to go out you feel a little bit like a shut in. It's tough sitting around all day not being able to go out. He also hasn't been feeling well for the past week which adds to his frustration. We're in the final weeks of being able to go home and we're hoping it will be sooner rather then later.

Fran,

I just found out about this blog (Thanks, Mitch). I'm glad to be able to catch up with your status.

You're taking some tough shots from everyone on this blog. Payback does, indeed, seem to be a bitch.

I know it goes without saying, but you're in my prayers, Fran. Keep fighting, friend.

Hey Fran and Sandy- seems like congratulations are in order! You aren't missing much at 2008 Fran, just weird things like turning off the white noise machine on the 2nd floor - you could hear my charm bracelet jingling from a mile away, and the anticipated departure of the Flavia machine! Today was a big ol slushy icy mess on the commute, I am sure you are glad you didn't have to navigate it. Don't worry about the cabin fever, it hits everyone at this time of year- hang in there, and can't wait to see you in your office at the new building- it's very posh!

Let’s see where to begin:

Fran began showing the signs of rejection called graft vs. host disease which is a good thing provided they can keep it controlled. The thought is no rejection could mean the marrow isn’t seeing the body as foreign. If it doesn’t see the body as foreign it doesn’t see the cancer as a problem either. So it’s good to see some signs. It hit his skin so he had the rash from head to toe which then turn really dry and chapped. The plus side is he exfoliated so much skin he has less winkles. People pay good money to have then gone.

Jess had been exposed to a common virus so she had the antibody in her blood. Fran had never been exposed to this virus so they said they’d need to watch him for this virus. Well the steroids they gave him to control the rejections triggered the virus so he has going for him now.

They did a blood culture last week and found a bacterial infection on top of the virus he already has. So we’re back to attaching these antibiotic pumps to him twice a day.

Today they went to do the PET scan to see how much if any cancer is detected however couldn’t because they found that his blood sugar is too high. All the medications he is on have now made him diabetic. He’s becoming more frustrated with the issues he’s been challenged with but I keep reminding him he is still here so in my eyes there’s hope.

Hey Fran and Sandy! Oh man already getting skin treatments for your wrinkles. Please tell me there's no toenails being painted pink down there to pass the time! Anyway hang in there! Hope to see you up here soon!

Hey Fran, just checking in and seeing how things are going. I've been pretty busy lately, recovering from my Super Bowl hangover. Its seems to be lasting a long time. haha

But more importantly, The birth of my first child on Monday night!!! Tina is hanging in there, it was pretty rough on her but she is a trooper just like you and will be back to 100% in no time.

The little guy will be looking forward to meeting you sometime soon in the future.

Hope everything is going well for you and you are continuing that journey back to the top!!!!

See you soon!!

Hi Fran & Sandy
I recently had lunch with Nicole and she told me about what you've been going through with your health. I would have sent my wishes for good health a lot sooner had i known. I'm so glad to hear you're on the road to recovery. I would have thought at the end of your journey you'd look forward to a nice tropical vacation but I understand getting back to work can feel pretty great too. I hope you are nering the end of your recovery and can enjoy whatever "normal" is! Love to you both, you'll be in my prayers. Dani Lind
